What is Agricultural Chemistry and Fertilizer?

Agricultural Chemistry is the study of both chemistry and biochemistry which focuses on chemical compositions and changes involved in agricultural production, protection, processing of raw products into foods and beverages, in environment monitoring and use of crops and livestock’s. Agricultural Chemistry often aims at preserving or increasing the fertility of soil, maintaining or improving the agricultural yield and improving the quality of the crop.

Any substances (Chemical, organic and microbial) that is added to the soil or plant (in low concentration) to supply elements required for the proper development and growth of plant is called fertilizers.

Example of Fertilizers:

  1. Chemical fertilizers: Urea (N2H4CO), TSP [Ca(H2PO4)2.H2O], MoP (KCl) etc.
  2. Organic fertilizers: Cow dung, farmyard manure, compost etc.
  3. Bio-fertilizers: Rhizobium, Azotobacter, Azospirillum, Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria, mycorrhiza and blue green algae.
